The green start™ series
is designed to help give kids an awareness of the natural world and an
understanding of how we are interconnected with everything around us.
By giving kids a green start, it will be that much easier for them to
incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their everyday
lives as they grow.
This earth-friendly series is made from 98% post-consumer recycled
materials and is printed with eco-friendly ink. Each hardcover book's
simple, non-fiction content inspires children to love and respect the
natural world, and the parent spread at the back of each book shows how
easy it is to practice (and teach!) earth friendly habits right at
home.

Here are a few environmentally-friendly activities that you and your child can try at home!
The Colors of Nature
If your child is just starting to learn his or her first colors, this is a great way to introduce them to colors through nature. Using white paper, make a booklet for your child. Print out black and white pictures of things in nature for your child to color in using primarily one color, such as a red apple, a green bug, or a yellow sun. As your child colors in each picture, write the name of the color at the top of the page. Soon, your child will have a whole rainbow of colors from nature!
Make a recycled bird feeder!
1) Collect the following: an empty plastic bottle (a soda bottle, milk carton, or similar container works well), a few sturdy twigs or dowel rods, waterproof acrylic paints, twine or string, and birdseeds.
2) Punch holes on both sides of the bottle so that you can push the dowels or twigs through to make perches for the birds. Please note that an adult should do all of the hole punching and cutting in this activity.
3) Cut an opening above each of the perches so the birds can get to the seeds.
4) Decorate the outside of your bird feeder with the acrylic paints to give it a splash of color. Let the paint dry completely.
5) Tie the string or twine around the bottle's neck (or punch holes on either side of the bottle's neck and thread the string or twine through, depending on the container you are using) and hang it from a tree outside.
6) Fill the bird feeder with seeds and watch the birds enjoy!
Wild Room Makeover
Introduce your child to far away places without ever leaving home! Print out pictures of your child's favorite animals from a particular place on Earth. It could be the dessert, the arctic, under the sea, or in the rainforest. Have your child cut out the animals and hang them around their room (you could also use shoeboxes for each animal's environment). Then have your child add decorations for those animals' environments, such as pictures of coral for under the sea, or snowflakes for the arctic. Once the room is decorated, encourage your child to imagine that they are actually in that environment and to act like their favorite animal!
Host a recycled art day!
Here are a few craft ideas using materials you can find around the house:
1. Apple and Potato prints:
*Apples and potatoes make great stamps! Cut designs into apple or potato halves (let the kids help come up with the designs, but an adult should do the cutting). Then you just need to provide paper and inkpads or paint.
2. Fun with cardboard tubes:
*Raid your recycling container for Toilet Paper and/or Paper Towel tubes. Tape up the ends and fill with beans to make rain sticks, or create bracelets by cutting a slit down the side to make a cuff. Kids will have a blast decorating them with markers.
3. Magazine collages
*Have an old stack of magazines sitting around? Let kids tear out (or cut with safety scissors) pictures to make into collages.
